Atheist is a death metal band from Sarasota, Florida, formed in 1987. The original lineup included vocalist and rhythm guitarist Kelly Shaefer, lead guitarist Rand Burkey, bassist Roger Patterson, and drummer Steve Flynn. The band is recognized for its technically demanding playing style, and the 1991 album *Unquestionable Presence* is considered a key work in technical death metal. Their following was mostly within their own genre. The group broke up in 1994, reformed in 2006, and has since put out one studio album and a live DVD.
The band first got together in 1984 under the name Oblivion, later changing to R.A.V.A.G.E. (short for "Raging Atheists Vowing A Gory End"). Early on, club management called the police on the band twice, leading to them being removed from the venues. Shaefer recalled that the clubs, used to booking acts like Mötley Crüe, were shocked by their sound. The band saw being kicked out as a badge of honor. Their debut album, *Piece of Time*, came out in 1989.
Bassist Roger Patterson died on February 12, 1991, in a van accident at age 22, just before the band was set to record their second album. They were returning from a tour with Candlemass; the band traveled by bus but used a van to avoid extra rental fees. The guitar tech driving tried to pass a semi, misjudged the lane change, and went off the road. When he tried to steer back onto the highway, he lost control, and Patterson was thrown from the van. He tried to get up but went into shock. The crash happened in rural Louisiana, and it took 48 minutes for emergency services to arrive. Patterson died on the way to the hospital. Shaefer was told coldly by a nurse while getting stitches. Fans sent an outpouring of support. At Patterson’s memorial, Shaefer noted the sight of fans in Atheist shirts and a nervous preacher. The band then brought in ex-Pestilence and Cynic bassist Tony Choy to record *Unquestionable Presence*, released in 1991.
Atheist first disbanded in 1992, then reunited in 1993 to record a third album, *Elements*, to fulfill their contract, before splitting again in early 1994. Relapse Records reissued the three albums in late 2005, along with a vinyl box set that included the R.A.V.A.G.E. demo "On They Slay."
